Google Confirms Purchase Of Satellite Startup Skybox Imaging For $500M

Google is today confirming that it has purchased Skybox Imaging, the satellite startup that we reported it was close to acquiring last month. The price is somewhat lower than we had heard it would be: $500 million rather than close to the $1 billion our sources had told us.

Once the deal closes, Skybox’s employees will wear a few different hats.

NASA bringing high-speed Internet access coming to the moon?

Laser just got cooler. After three years of development, researchers from NASA and MIT are set to debut the moon Internet, Time.com reports.

It sounds a tad spacey, but this technology uses lasers to transmit data to and from the moon resulting in super-fast Internet speed. Time adds, "the test apparently achieved upload speeds of 19.44 megabits per second and download speeds of 622 megabits per second over the 384,633km between earth and the moon."

Sony to stop selling PlayStation Portable

TOKYO –  Sony Corp. is pulling the plug on its hand-held PlayStation Portable video game machine after 10 years.

The Japanese electronics and entertainment company has been pushing the successor machine, PlayStation Vita.

Tokyo-based Sony said Tuesday that PSP shipments ended in North America in January, will end in Japan this month and later this year in Europe.

Google launches 64-bit version of Chrome, starting with Dev and Canary channels for Windows 7 and Windows 8

Google today announced the debut of a 64-bit version of Chrome for Windows, starting with the introduction of 64-bit Dev and Canary channels for Windows 7 and Windows 8 users. You can download both now from their respective pages: Dev and Canary.

It’s worth noting that in both cases the 64-bit version is offered by default if you are running a 64-bit flavor of Windows, though the 32-bit version is still available. This would suggest Google eventually plans to serve up the 64-bit version of Chrome as the default version for 64-bit Windows users.

Apple Launches Swift, A New Programming Language For Writing iOS And OS X Apps

At its WWDC developer event today, Apple surprised all of the developers in the audience by launching a new programming language called Swift. This new language seems to be poised to replace Objective-C as the main programming language on Apple’s platforms.

Swift will use the same LLVM compiler and runtime as Apple’s Objective-C implementation, so Swift and Objective-C code can live side-by-side in the same application. The language provides access to all of the Cocoa and Cocoa Touch features developers are currently used to from Objective-C.

Google will reportedly spend over $1 billion to build satellites that deliver internet access

google is planning to spend over $1 billion — and possibly up to $3 billion — on satellites that can bring internet access to regions around the world that still don’t have connectivity, the Wall Street Journal reports. The project is said to kick off with 180 “small, high-capacity satellites” that circle around earth at lower altitudes than the traditional ones.
