Fire outbreak in Unilag

A fire incident has occurred at Yem Yem shopping complex in UNILAG btw 12 am and 12:15am. There are currently no reports of any casualties but eye witnesses say that it started from a shop which sells Shawarma and operates a cybercafé.

There are ongoing efforts to put out the fire by the Security unit. This is happening in the spate of recent fire incidents like the burning of MADAM TINUBU Hall last week Sunday and the burning of a room in Eni-njoku hall. Let’s hope there will be adequate measures taken to curtail these incidents in the future. There are also reports that so far there has been no response from the fire department.

 RECENT UPDATE: The Fire has been extinguished by the help of the Courageous students of UNILAG and other staff members which would have spread to the popular Yem Yem supermarket. the fire department has just arrived at the scene after the fire has been put off since. There are also reports of looting of the premises by students which are reportedly stealing swift modems, “icecream” e.t.c . There is now a mob standing outside blocking firefighters from entering the premises and they are assaulting the fire truck. Some students are also reportedly leaving Mariere Hall to take part in the free-for-all.

00:53hrs        Lagos state Fire Services arrives, but students won’t allow them                                                    enter the premises; most students actually taught they were Unilag                            fire services they were angry because they came late.  They fire                           services van was stoned with pure water and bottle water until they                          eventually broke the screen.
