Thomas Vermaelen’s transfer for Arsenal to Manchester United
is still far from being being completed as Arsene Wenger continues to
hold up the deal.
Earlier reports had suggested that Wenger was reluctant to
sanction the deal even though the player wants the move.
Now though the Telegraph report that the reason the deal is being held up
is because Wenger wants a player from United in exchange.
It is unclear exactly which player Wenger wants to sign
although he has tracked Chris Smalling in the past and it is also unclear
whether or not Louis van Gaal would be receptive to allowing a player to leave.
Van Gaal will now take over the reigns at Old Trafford with
the World Cup finished and the Dutchman would probably want to evaluate some
players before he decides whether or not to sell them.
Wenger is aware that his defence is looking a little light
following the departure of Bacary Sagna to Manchester City and the situation
will worsen when Vermaelen leaves.
Thomas Vermaelen started just seven games for Arsenal last
season
