Former Manchester United captain Bryan Robson believes that
Wayne Rooney will be the next England captain, telling Sky Sports news that there is a lack of candidates
for the role beyond the Manchester United striker.
The position as Roy Hodgson’s captain has become vacant
thanks to Steven
Gerrard’s international retirement this week and Robson doesn’t believe
that there is a standout choice as to his successor.
Alongside Rooney, Joe Hart and Gary Cahill have both been
mooted as potential captains due to their status as senior players, but Robson
is unsure.
He admitted to Sky, “You look at all the candidates and
there’s not many about.
“For years you have always had two or three players who
could actually be England captain but at the moment I don’t see a stand-out
one.”
Robson continued by suggesting that Rooney will get the role
by virtue of being, in his opinion, the side’s best player.
“Wayne Rooney is our best player as far as I’m concerned at
this moment in time, and maybe Wayne is the one who will get the armband.”
Rooney has made 95 appearances for England since his 2003
debut and featured in all three of England’s games at the World Cup, scoring
against Uruguay. The failed World Cup campaign was the 28-year-old’s fifth
major tournament, having previously played at the 2004 and 2012 European
Championships and the 2006 and 2010 World Cups.
