The first total lunar eclipse of the year, dubbed
"Blood Moon 2014," happened early Tuesday morning. The world didn't
end as predicted in social media, but rain and clouds did deny Staten Islanders
a clear view.
The phenomenon-- where the earth's shadow blocks the sun and
that casts a pall over the moon-- was the start of what's know in science lingo
as the eclipse tetrad of four total lunar eclipses over the next 18 months. The
eclipse is called a "blood moon" because the moon appears to have a
red color.
Social media was buzzing with the myth that the blood moon
heralds the end of the world.
Weather permitting, most people in North America who were up
in the middle of night could see the eclipse which began around 2 a.m. Tuesday
on the East Coast and lasted for more than three hours
